Whole Wheat Bread

Whole Wheat Bread

I am a serious bread lover and since I am eating healthier, I did not want to give up the thing I love so much. Instead of doing plain white bread I decided to bake a whole wheat bread with oatmeal. You don’t need any fancy ingredients to create this delicious and healthy bread. I know a lot of whole wheat bread recipes asks for malt and some even honey but if you are on a fixed budget and can only afford basic ingredients that shouldn’t stop you from eating quality and delicious foods.

The bread recipe I am about to share with you takes a few simple pantry ingredients and about 1 hour of your time.

What You’ll Need

  • 600g or 4 ¾ cups Whole Wheat Flour (save 50g or ¾ for later)
  • 50g or ½ cups oatmeal
  • 10g or 1 tbsp yeast
  • 20g or 2 tbsp sugar
  • 50g or 3 ½ tbsp butter
  • 450g or 2 cups warm water

How To Make It

  • Add yeast, sugar and ½ of water in mixing bowl.
  • Add flour and salt to bowl, mix salt into flour, and add remaining water, then mix to combine.
  • Once a dough has formed, it will still look wet and sticky, add oatmeal, and continue to mix.
  • Add remaining 50g of flour and continue to mix.
  • Dough should start to pull away from the sides of mixing bowl as dough develops.
  • If dough is too sticky, add 1 tbsp of whole wheat flour to help.
  • Once dough is fully formed (do the windowpane test) divide into 2 equal portions (or into amounts you choose) and rest dough for 30-45 minutes on prepared baking sheet.
  • Once dough has rested, slit the top of the bread with a lamb or serrated knife with 2 lines across (=), or a hashtag (#) or even a cross (x) the video illustrates how slits are created.
  • Bake for 20-25 at 400F. Bread will be golden brown once baked.

Enjoy your bread

Things To Note

  • Dough will be tacky not sticky. Tacky meaning it will feel gummy and dry not wet and sticky. (the video gives a visual representation of this)
  • You will be tempted to add more flour when kneading on the work surface, please do not. Adding more flour will create a denser product.
  • Chia seeds can also be added to this bread to make it even more hearty.

This is such a chewy bread, it is perfect for dipping in soups and making the perfect sandwich. I love the crunch that I get when I sink my teeth into a toasted slice of this bread. It’s crusty on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside, just how I love my breads!
